You have to get the work done through your&nbsp;team and at the same time ensure that your team has good morale and that they remain&nbsp;motivated.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s often difficult for leaders to find their place in a department as they don\u2019t want to be&nbsp;seen as a micromanager, but also don\u2019t want to be seen as a pushover.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A good leader is one that is assertive, yet fair but many simply do not know how to be&nbsp;assertive with their teams.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s first take a look at three key assertive phrases that you can use and then we\u2019ll take a detailed look at how you can say no to others as well \u2013 a very common issue amongst&nbsp;managers who need to be more assertive.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Assertiveness <\/strong>p<strong>hrases to use&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">One &#8211; \u201cThis is a priority\u201d&nbsp;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Some managers find that it\u2019s very difficult to assign tasks to their staff and emphasise how important they are.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not uncommon for leaders to give out projects, only to get them returned late, missing an important deadline and making the manager look bad in front of clients, partners or bosses.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you give out multiple tasks to your employees, you need to assert yourself as the person who decides when things are due.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do not leave it up to your staff members to figure out what they need to focus on first.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A simple phrase such as, \u201cthis takes priority,\u201d will provide clear and detailed instructions to your workers about what they need to focus on first.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Two &#8211; \u201cI will review and come to a decision shortly\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><gwmw style=\"display:none;\"><gwmw style=\"display:none;\"><\/gwmw><gwmw style=\"display:none;\"><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s important to make your employees feel that you are a team and that you value their thoughts, opinions and decisions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, there is a clear hierarchy in the office, with a manager being the top of that&nbsp;hierarchy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your employees need to understand that and respect you enough to accept your decisions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although you may ask your staff members to provide their input on a decision, you need to make it clear that you will be the ultimate party making that decision.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Saying something along the lines of \u201cI will review your suggestions and come to a decision shortly,\u201d is a simple and direct way to let your team know that you are the ultimate decision-maker in your department.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plus, stating that you need time to review the suggestions allows you to make your employees feel appreciated by knowing that you will consider all of their thoughts, instead of automatically saying yes or no to some or others.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Three &#8211; \u201cI don\u2019t appreciate that tone, you need to find a different way to communicate&nbsp;your thoughts\u201d&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Although it\u2019s a common belief that employees are scared of their managers and would never disrespect them, many leaders can attest that is not true.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some individuals simply don\u2019t know how to manage their emotions, and when they are upset or angry, they can lash out of their boss.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a manager, it\u2019s tough to figure out what to do in that situation; you want to be empathetic towards the other person, but you also want to establish clear boundaries and let the other person know what is a not acceptable in the office.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A good phrase to use in that scenario is \u201cI don\u2019t appreciate that tone, you need to find a different way to communicate your thoughts.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This type of assertiveness makes it clear to the other person that you need them to respect you, and that you will not tolerate the way they are speaking to you.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, you also keep your cool in this situation, and not say anything rude or hurtful,&nbsp;either.&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For managers to be successful, their team members need to respect and follow them. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":4,"featured_media":960,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"content-type":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[22],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-941","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-blog"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.3.1 -
